Merseyside Police have released images of the red Mitsubishi pick up truck that killed on of their officers.

A post mortem revealed 34-year-old David Phillips died as a result of the internal injuries he suffered when the stolen truck was driven into him in Wallsey yesterday.

It was later found abandoned on Corbyn Street.

PC Phillips' death is being treated as murder and an investigation is being led by detectives from the force's Matrix Serious Organised Crime (MSOC) unit.

The truck had been stolen during a burglary in Woodchurch Road in Birkenhead.

PC Phillips had been trying to stop it using a stop-stick device when the driver mounted the central reservation of Wallasey Dock North Road, hitting him.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who saw the red Mitsubishi pick-up between 1.12am when the burglary occurred in Woodchurch Road and to when it was found abandoned in Corbyn Street at 2.55am to come forward.

They can contact Merseyside Police on 0800 230 0600 or leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
