A Wirral mum has told Radio City News how her toddler son has been left scarred for life on his face after a terrifying dog attack.

3 year old Sonnie was out walking with his father between Nocotrum Avenue and the Woodchurch Estate near Birkenhead around 2.30pm on Monday when he was attacked by a black lurcher cross type animal.

His dad fought the dog off - but Sonnie's had to undergo surgery after being taken to hospital where he underwent surgery and continues to be treated to injuries to his face.

His mum Hollie says it could affect him for years to come.

"His dad managed to put his hand through this hole between the jaw and Sonnie's neck, the dog's yelped and his dad grabbed Sonnie and just ran."

"He's incredible. This has changed my life, people say you can be over protective but I'm frightened as any mother would be, it's awful to think what could of happened, it's hard not to."

"If it's stray stay away, you should never approach a stranger so why would you approach a stray dog, just stay vigilant. I just keep thinking if it was me with Sonnie, we both wouldn't be here. Don't approach a dog you don't know"

Neighbourhood Inspector Georgie Minnery said: “As you can see from the pictures, this was a particularly nasty bite on a little boy who was just walking with his dad. Residents should be able to feel safe in the community and as such we treat all incidents of this nature very seriously"

“We are carrying out a number of enquiries in the area to try and trace this dog, and its owner (if it has one). If anyone from the local community has seen this dog, I’d urge you to get in contact.”
