Fans of Emmerdale were left in disbelief at last night’s (Thursday 29th September) episode when popular character Holly Barton was killed off without any warning.

Viewers watched on as Holly, who is played by Sophie Powles, was found dead after a heroin overdose without any warning about her departure whatsoever. Holly’s body was discovered by her emotional mother Moira and brother Adam in bed next to a piece of foil.

Clearly heartbroken at the scene, viewers took to social media to express their disbelief at her death.

After only returning to the soap in March, the actress told ITV bosses she wanted to leave the show last month and it seems they wasted no time in writing her character out.

Despite being devastated at Holly’s death, viewers praised Emmerdale writers for keeping the storyline a secret.

After the powerful episode aired, actress Sophie Powles posted an emotional goodbye message to fans on her Instagram account. She wrote, “Good Bye Holly. After the most amazing 6 months back at Emmerdale, Holly's journey has finally come to a very sad ending.

"I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to be part of such an important story line, one that has and continues to effect so many families and individuals. I have been so touched and inspired by all the people I have had the pleasure to meet and learn from.

“Thank you to all of the people who have taken time to stop me in the street and share your own stories of addiction and all you who given such positive feedback. I really have had the best 6 months and I couldn't have asked to work with a more incredible cast and crew in a better working environment! Just been surrounded by such inspiring talent, friendship, love and support!

“Love every single one of you. So proud to have been a part of @emmerdale! Thank you to all of you including our amazing fans and my awesome friends and family. #holly #emmerdale #addiction #itv"

The show continues to air weekdays at 7pm.
